Es ist das größte klassische Musikereignis der Welt, wird in mehr als 90 Länder übertragen und von mehr als 50 Millionen Menschen in der ganzen Welt mitverfolgt. Am Dirigentenpult steht zum ersten Mal der lettische Dirigent Andris Nelsons.

Die Wiener Philharmoniker präsentieren zum Jahreswechsel wieder ein heiteres und zugleich besinnliches Programm aus dem reichen Repertoire der Strauss-Dynastie und deren Zeitgenossen. Das Orchester versteht sich als musikalischer Botschafter Österreichs und möchte allen Menschen einen Gruß im Geiste von Hoffnung, Freundschaft und Frieden übermitteln.

Im Herzen von Wien interpretiert das Wiener Staatsballett zwei Choreografien: Im Winterpalais von Prinz Eugen von Savoyen tanzen Paare eine Choreografie zu "Seid umschlungen, Millionen", einem der berühmtesten Walzer des "Walzerkönigs" Johann Strauss. Das barocke Palais diente Prinz Eugen als Winterresidenz, die Sommermonate verbrachte er im Schloss Belvedere. Am Fuße des bekannten Wiener Nussbergs liegt der Nussdorfer Pfarrplatz. Ein romantischer Ort, der dem Staatsballett eine hervorragende Bühne bietet für Contretänze von Ludwig van Beethoven. Beide Choreografien hat der spanische Choreograf José Carlos Martinez geschaffen.

Petroc Trelawny hosts the traditional start to the year with music from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. This year’s concert is led for the first time by the celebrated Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons, guiding the Vienna Philharmonic in an array of polkas, waltzes and gallops by the Strauss family and their contemporaries. Furthermore, to celebrate the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, the composer’s Contretanze is played alongside a ballet scene.

As always, the concert ends with the ever-popular By the Beautiful Blue Danube and the foot-stamping Radetzky March.

The concert is transmitted to some 50 million viewers in over 90 countries.
